OPP Lay Hundreds Of Charges Easter Weekend

The Ontario Provincial Police say it laid 266 charges in Essex County over the Easter long weekend during a traffic blitz.

Most of the charges are for speeding. A total of 143 drivers were caught driving over the speed limit on roads patrolled by the OPP. One driver was charged with street racing. Police issue that ticket when drivers are caught going twice the speed limit.

There were 18 seat belt violations. Another 52 drivers did not have proper insurance when they were stopped.

Police also laid two charges under the Liquor License Act, one charge of impaired driving and handed out three suspensions related to alcohol. Another six charges were laid for drug offences.

There were 45 deaths on OPP patrolled roads in 2016 related to the use of seat belts and police say they are working to lower those numbers.

The Easter Traffic Safety Initiative was focused on seat belt use, aggressive driving, impaired driving and distracted driving.
