High Winds Causing Damage (GALLERY)

With high winds gusting to 100 km/h Wednesday, damage can be seen throughout Windsor and Essex County.

Enwin Utilities, Essex Powerlines, and Hydro One are reporting multiple outages across the county due to downed hydro lines.  Due to the power outages traffic lights throughout the area are out or flashing, these should be treated as four-way stops.  The utility companies are reminding people to stay away downed power lines.

In Tecumseh, a field fire due to a downed power line on Walker Rd. and North Talbot has closed Walker Rd. The fire is now under control.

A wind warning from Environment Canada was in effect for most of the day on Wednesday, until around 8pm.

OPP Constable Karen Sinnaeve is cautioning motorists to slow down and be aware of their surroundings.

"We just have to be extremely careful. The wind is blowing extremely strong out there and it`s been blowing all day long.  Things are being compromised in the sense of you've got this continual breeze hitting these trees eventually they may be compromised. Drivers need to be extra cautious, pay attention to their surroundings and just slow down also it helps control their vehicles better when they are out on the roadways in these heavy winds," says Sinnaeve.

Sinnaeve is asking residents to only call OPP in a true emergency and to check the power outage sites (linked above) for information on power outages.
