New Bridge To Include Multi-Use Trail

The Gordie Howe International Bridge will include a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.

The three groups making proposals have been asked to include have been asked to include have been asked to include a two-direction path that is separated by barriers from the vehicular traffic.

President of the WDBA Michael Cautillo says bike lanes were always contemplated as part of the design so this will not delay the design process.

"The bridge configuration was always there, so now what we've done is enabled this to actually occur," says Cautillo.

Cautillo says the CBSA and the US Border Protection agencies have agreed to accommodate the customs function for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

"We wanted to separate them and still do it in a safe manner but also be respectful of the customs functions that have to occur," says Cautillo.

The bridge will connect cyclists to the bike paths along the Herb Gray Parkway and other greenways throughout the county along with bike trails into Detroit.
