Labour Talks For Border Guards Break Down

The union that represents 8,000 workers at the Canadian Border Services Agency, including those at the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, says talks with the Treasury Board have broken down.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada says it spent three days in mediation with the Treasury Board last week and made no progress.

Border guards want wage parity and retirement benefits consistent with the RCMP and other law-enforcement agencies. The union says it has also raised concerns about protections against CBSA management "abuse of authority" and is asking for a paid meal period. It says the employer has either rejected demands or done nothing to address those concerns.

It says management is seeking "serious" concessions that are "unacceptable".

The union says talks are at an impasse and the next step will be to file for a Public Interest Commission.
