Crime Rates Down In Windsor

Crime rates in the City of Windsor continue to trend downwards.

Overall, crime was down 1.3% in 2016, compared to 2015 and violent crime down 17% over 2015.

Superintendent Pam Mizuno says this has been a trend over the last ten years.

"Overall, the number of criminal code occurrences is trending downward. It's a 2% decrease over the five year average, and also an 8% decrease over the ten year average," says Mizuno.

Property crimes in the city were up slightly in 2016, with a 1.3% increase over 2015.

"Those numbers fluctuate up and down over the course of the year, but again, over the ten years, it's at a 7% decline in those property crimes," says Mizuno.

Youth crime is also down significantly with a 40% decrease over the five year average. Mizuno credits school programs like the VIP and the high school liaison program for the decrease.

The Windsor Police Service had an 80% clearance rate in 2016, meaning they solved 80% of their cases. That's the best clearance rate in the province, and 10% above the average.
