How To Protect Your Home In Severe Weather

The Town of Tecumseh is holding a public information meeting Thursday to help homeowners protect their homes in the event of severe weather.

Town officials decided to hold the session after flooding last September caused more than $100-million in damage.

It starts at 3pm at L'Essor Secondary School on St.Gregory's Rd in Tecumseh. There will be a presentation from engineers in the town's Public Works Department at 3:30pm and 6pm. Local plumbing contractors, home improvement suppliers, officials from the Insurance Bureau of Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs will be there to answer questions.

Tecumseh offers two subsidy programs for flood prevention work. The first is to disconnect foundation drains and install sump pumps. The second is for installing backwater valves. More than 300 residents have applied for the backwater subsidy program.

So far, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs says only 200 applications have been filed from Tecumseh for provincial disaster relief, and the deadline is January 31.
