Spitfires Lose in Shootout to Niagara 4-3

Cristiano DiGiacinto scored a goal and got two assists, but the Windsor Spitfires fell in a shootout to the Niagara IceDogs Saturday night 4-3 at the Meridian Centre.

The Spitfires remain in second place in the OHL's West Division with 47 points, one point behind the idle Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

DiGiacinto opened the scoring in the contest at 12:10 into the first period with his eighth goal of the year.  That would be the only scored on either side in the initial 20 minutes of play.  Aaron Luchuk would double the Windsor lead well into the second period, scoring his 13th goal of the season at 13:55 into the frame.  Niagara would get on the board a minute and 40 seconds later on a power play goal by Christopher Paquette.

The IceDogs picked up two unanswered goals in the third period.  Akil Thomas got the equalizer at just 44 ticks into the frame, and Johnny Corneil scored an unassisted goal at 8:47 to give the IceDogs the lead.  Mikhail Sergachev would tie things up for Windsor later in the third period with his second goal of the season.  The overtime period came and went before the IceDogs would take the game in the shootout.

Windsor outshot the IceDogs 43-29, and Mario Culina would take the loss for the Spitfires in goal.  The Spits now head on their Christmas break and will return on December 28 to complete their extended road trip in Saginaw against the Spirit.
