City Ploughs Making Progress

Windsor's executive director of public works says all the main roads in the city are ploughed, and work has begun on residential streets.

Dwayne Dawson says the ploughs were out Sunday before the worst of the storm hit, and again afterwards.

He says the EC Row Expy., arterial roads and bus routes are clear, but residential streets will take longer.

"Usually we budget about 24 hours for those," says Dawson. "We're hoping to have them all cleaned up hopefully sometime [Tuesday] morning."

In Essex County, engineer Tom Bateman says the main roads are clear, but wet. The county leaves residential roads to the individual municipalities to plow.

The city contracts out 17 big ploughs and has four of its own. Dawson says some smaller ploughs are working on some of the harder to reach streets.

He is also asking the public for some help. In addition to keeping vehicles off the roads until the ploughs pass by, Dawson wants residents who are shovelling to shovel the snow somewhere other than onto the road.

"We've had some issues today with people clearing their snow and pushing their snow onto the streets, both residential and commercial," he says. "That is against the city bylaw. It makes for some dangerous driving conditions."

If you have a concern about clearing city streets, Dawson recommends calling the 311 call centre.
