Tecumseh Vista Academy Wins Grant

The school community of Tecumseh Vista Academy is celebrating after winning a $100,000 Aviva Community grant.

The money is going toward creating a sustainable and accessible 1 km pathway to lead students to a naturalized outdoor learning area.

"We want the kids to learn about nature, to actually be stewards of nature and to take part in learning outdoors and growing food," says Heidi Hotz Nourse, a parent council representative.

She says all food grown at the school will be donated to the Downtown Mission to encourage students to give back.

The outdoor learning centre is a community collaboration with the Essex Region Conservation Authority, the Town of Tecumseh and local businesses like Unconquered Sun. The solar company is providing solar panels to power a plug at an outdoor, wheelchair accessible work station.

"This pathway is also going to connect us with a retirement home that is near by, it's going to connect us with Mcauliffe park, it will connect neighbourhoods that we have around here so people can come and walk," says Maria Theresa McCann

Construction on the project will begin in the spring.
