Windsor Implements New Smoking Bylaw

Windsor's smoking bylaw now includes hookahs and e-cigarettes, and extends to more areas of the city.

Smoking is now prohibited at all city parks, beaches, trails, bus shelters, recreation centres and marinas.

Eric Naudlin with the Windsor Essex County Health Unit says they are happy to see the city go beyond the requirements of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act.

"This is beneficial not only because it reduces the actual physical exposure, but because it takes tobacco use out of normalized behaviour in these spaces," says Naudlin.

According to the new bylaw the definition of smoking includes e-cigarettes, water pipes, or any other lighted or heated equipment used to smoke or vaporize any tobacco or non-tobacco product.

Windsor is among seven other municipalities in Windsor-Essex that have expanded on regulations in the Smoke-Free Ontario Act. The health unit is currently working with the municipality of Amherstburg to implement a similar bylaw.
