Windsor Regional Hospital is working to implement new best practices for staff to improve patient care.
Janice Dawson, vice president of critical care, cardiology and clinical support services, says about 900 nurses — both RNs and RPNs — have been trained over the last six months as part of the initiative.
"We really wanted to put a program in place where we could support our nurses, provide them with some training that would support some of those changes and really embed in our practice some best practices," says Dawson.
According to Dawson, the hospital has looked at leaders in the health industry for these new best practices.
"Really focusing on that patient centred partnership model of care where we're putting the patient first, we're developing a team approach in how we deliver care," says Dawson.
Patients may not notice the changes, but Dawson stresses the training staff are getting will make a difference.
"We've looked for those research based best practices that are being used in other centres with good outcomes," says Dawson. "It's these best practices that will elevate that care to the next level."
Dawson adds hospital administration will be able to measure the results of the new model of care and determine if the new best practices are achieving the desired outcomes. She says some of that work is already being done.
