Duffy's Bought Up By Town Of Amherstburg

The Town of Amherstburg has bought Duffy's Tavern and Motel.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says the town has no intentions of entering the hospitality industry despite a shortage of hotel rooms in Amherstburg.

"It is an initiative I continue to work on with some private enterprises that have contacted me about it," he says. "I don't think Duffy's hotel really fits into what most people would consider accommodations these days."

Instead, the town plans to tear the building down and expand Navy Yard Park.

"That is part of the bigger picture," says DiCarlo. "That business plan, obviously, will come out publicly after the deal closes and then I guess we have to look at how it fits into our budget."

Before it officially changes hands, there are conditions to meet including an inspection of the property.

The business remained open even after announcing its closure in 2013. At that point, Duffy's had been open for 55 years, and DiCarlo admits it's past its prime.

It was on the market at one point for $3.2-million, but DiCarlo says the town is paying just shy of $1.7-million.
