Tobacco Smoke Common Thread in Cancer Cluster

Tobacco smoke is the only common link between 12 lung cancer cases in the Remington Park area.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit conducted a study in the residential area in Windsor because there were twice as many lung cancer diagnoses there than the provincial average between 2000 and 2009.

The study found that of the 12 people who participated in the study were either smokers themselves or lived with someone who smoked. There were no other common links found among the 12 participants.

Other risk factors were present but not consistent among the 12 cases. Job-related exposure may have been a factor for 11 people in the study. Four worked in manufacturing, five in construction, two in transportation, two in metals and one in pulp and paper.

Other causes may have come from a previous home, family history, or other exposures.

The health unit will continue to monitor lung cancer cases in the Remington Park area. They will discuss the findings of their study at a public meeting on Thursday, September 8, at 6:30pm at the Optimist Community Centre located at 1075 Ypres Avenue.
