Ambassador Bridge Curbs And Railings 'Pose Risk To Public Safety'

Citing public safety concerns on the Canadian side of the Ambassador Bridge, Transport Canada has issued an emergency direction to the Canadian Transit Company (CTC).

Transport Canada says during an August safety inspection, it was determined that a section of the bridge’s railings and curbs "pose a risk to public safety."

The CTC, which owns the Ambassador Bridge, has been instructed to immediately install temporary concrete barriers between the traffic on the bridge and the outside curb as a safety precaution.

Transport Canada says is has previously communicated its concerns about the railings and curbs to the CTC.

"I ask the Canadian Transit Company, as the bridge’s owner, to do everything it can to speed up repair work in order to reduce crossing delays," says Minister of Transport Marc Garneau in a media release. "Should action not be taken in a timely manner, I will not hesitate to take additional safety measures."

Border officials in the United States and Canada are working together to limit any traffic issues, however travelers are encouraged to plan ahead.
