Atkinson Could Be Honoured With Bridge Renaming

A bridge connecting Hwy. 3 to St. Clair College may be renamed after fallen Windsor police Constable John Atkinson.

"It's about recognizing Constable John Atkinson someone we know gave the ultimate sacrifice to make this community safe, to keep this community safe and it's certainly appropriate that we do whatever we can to make sure that that name is vivid and remembered by those in the community," says Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

He says there are still different levels of approvals needed.

"The policy from the province requires approval from the municipality, from the police services board and in this case the reason it's somewhat complicated is that the bridge is actually half in the city of Windsor and half in the town of LaSalle," says Dilkens.

Atkinson, a 14-year veteran of the Windsor Police Service, was shot and killed while investigating a drug deal at a variety store in May 2006.
