Humane Society Having Adoption Sale

The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society is holding a one-day sale on animal adoptions.

For the third time ever the humane society is holding a "choose your own adoption fee" event Thursday.

"It's really good to ease up on a bit of a space crunch and allow more space for animals to move in. It also helps to sometimes get animals adopted who may have been overlooked," says Executive Director Melanie Coulter.

Coulter says they often experience low adoption rates during the summer and they are starting to feel crowded.

"People are going away, people are thinking about vacations so sometimes they think, we'll adopt in September when everything settles down," says Coulter.

The normal adoption fee ranges from $125-$245 depending on the type of animal. The adoption package includes spay/neuter surgery, microchip, vaccines, 6 weeks of health insurance, and post-adoption training classes.

Coulter says they've only held this type of event two previous times and generally people pay around half of the normal adoption fee.

"We've actually had a couple cases where people have offered to pay more than the adoption fee which was just a nice, heartening thing to see that someone said 'you know what this animal is worth that much to me,'" says Coulter.

The offer is good for all animals in the shelter over six months old. A $30 administration fee will also be applied for administration costs.
