No Future Plans For Assumption Church

A west end Windsor councillor believes it's "irresponsible" for Assumption Church to sit empty with no plans for the future.

The Diocese of London tells BlackburnNews.com it has no future plans for the 174-year-old church other than to let it sit empty.

Officials say there are no current fundraising campaigns or outside donations being explored.

Ward 2 councillor John Elliott says he's very disappointed.

"That's disheartening to hear because of the historical parts of the church," says Elliott. "For the Diocese to not look into finding the resources to keep it viable -- I don't know exactly what their plan is, over time to let it decay -- to me it's not good stewardship."

The Rosary Chapel next to the church is still open for weekday masses and holds around 80 people. There are plans to get a new roof for the chapel, but it's unclear at this point how much it will cost.

The only ongoing cost for the Assumption Church building is heating in the cooler months. Officials say they aren't putting any money into the building to maintain it in its current condition.

"If you look at the history in, let's say, the Ward 2 area [it was] the first church that was there," Elliott says. "To not be responsible in terms of the upkeep and the maintenance and the viability of it, that's not good."

Pastor at the parish Maurice Restivo estimates 40% of parishioners were lost during the transition from Assumption Church to Holy Name of Mary Church on McEwan Ave. Some he says don't attend church at all anymore and others go to their neighbourhood chapel.

Assumption Church held its last service in November, 2014.
