Riverside Dr. Goes On A "Diet"

There will be lane restrictions on Riverside Dr. Saturday as a stretch of the road goes on what the City of Windsor calls "a diet".

Riverside, from Ouellette Ave. to McDougall St., will close from 5am to 8am, and again from 2pm to 5pm. Between 8am and 2pm, the centre lanes will be open to traffic.

The closures will give planners, architects and urbanists room to reconfigure the area so it's easier for pedestrians to cross from downtown to the riverfront.

"We're demonstrating ways to better connect the downtown core to our beautiful riverfront," says City Planner Thom Hunt. "Narrowing the four lanes to two for a short stretch will make it nicer for pedestrians to move back and forth."

The demonstration comes on the last day of the CNU 24 conference in Detroit and Windsor. The city is working with the Congress for New Urbanism, the Windsor Region Society of Architects and the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association studying traffic calming through "tactical urbanism".
