Windsor Good Candidate For Basic Income Pilot

A group advocating for the reduction of poverty in the community thinks Windsor would be an ideal candidate for the province's pilot project on a basic income guarantee.

The basic income guarantee would give families living below the poverty line enough funds to meet their basic needs.

Director of Pathway to Potential Adam Vasey says Windsor would make a good candidate because it has one of the highest poverty rates in the country.

"Certainly from a needs based perspective and a evidence based perspective I think we would have a really great community to test this out in," says Vasey. "I also think we have a very committed community that would be very interested in working with the government to design the pilot properly. I think it is a good idea and it's one that we'll be actively pursuing with the government."

Vasey says the program could save the community money when it comes to health care and other poverty related costs.

"It puts a strain on all of our social programs and there are tons of costs associated with poverty that potentially could be addressed through this idea of a basic income," says Vasey.
