A petition calling on the federal government to amend the criminal code to recognize the murder of a Windsor woman's unborn daughter is being presented to area MPs today.
About 15,000 people have signed either the paper petition or its online version.
Cassandra Kaake was seven months pregnant when she was murdered in her home on Benjamin Ave. last winter. Before she died, she had picked the name Molly for her unborn child.
Matthew Brush faces one count of first-degree murder in Kaake's death, along with arson charges and one count of interference with a dead body.
Jeff Durham, Molly's biological father, has been fighting to have his daughter's death recognized in the criminal code. He left a copy of the petition at Windsor-West MP Brian Masse's office this morning.
He isn't surprised there's so much support for his cause in the community.
"I expect that people will recognize this injustice and want to do something about it," he says. "This stands independently of politics. It's a bi-partisan issue, and it needs attention."
A second copy of the petitions will be dropped off at Essex MP Tracey Ramsey's office. Durham says the third copy for Windsor-Tecumseh MP Cheryl Hardcastle will be dropped off at her office once it opens.
