LaSalle Woman Reacts To 62K Scam

Phone scammers posing as bank staff took more than $62,000 from an elderly LaSalle woman, but luckily she was able to get it all back.

Someone claiming to be a CIBC Mastercard supervisor called the woman questioning a $600 purchase made in China, LaSalle police say.

She disputed the charge, the man then asked for her credit card number and she complied.

The woman was transferred to another person claiming to be a manager, police say, all the while money was being transferred electronically from her account to another.

The called lasted about 45 minutes. The victim called her bank on Malden Rd. in LaSalle about 30 minutes later. That's when she learned more than $62,000 was taken from her accounts.

Luckily the woman reacted quick enough the bank was able to reverse the transactions. Police say if she had waited a day or more, that wouldn't have been possible.

Police say the moral of this story is to never give personal information over the phone.
