Public Libraries Prepare For Refugees

Windsor Public Library CEO Kitty Pope says some people may be surprised to learn libraries play an integral role in welcoming newcomers to Canada.

"Public libraries are often the forefront of making folks feel welcome and safe in any community," says Pope. "Ensuring refugees have access to information; access to information in their own language."

She says libraries in the system are preparing for 160 Syrian refugees who are expected to settle in Windsor in the coming weeks.

"We are just working on a piece right now where we will be able to provide access to our computers in both English and in Arabic so that folks can start the learning process."

Pope also says a lot of curious Windsor residents have requested information about the history of Syria and the current civil war.
