ERCA Seeks Public Input

The Essex Region Conservation Authority wants to know what your priorities are for the local environment as it puts together a ten-year strategic plan.

The authority has had a strategic plan since 1995 and has reviewed it every five years. However, the director of community outreach, Danielle Breault-Stuebing says it's moving to the longer vision because changes in the environment take time. The draft plan should be finished by the end of this year or early 2016.

She says the authority's launched an online survey to get public input.

"Is it climate change? Is it the fact we have fragmented areas," says Breault-Stuebing. "How does the community think that we could do a better job of engaging private landowners?"

The agency is working towards having 12% natural area coverage that is considered environmentally sustainable, but only has 8.5% now. Breault-Stuebing says part of the challenge is that public land in Windsor-Essex is limited, so the authority has to rely on private landowners to reach its goal.

The survey will wrap up at the end of September.
