Riverside Underpass Receives Mixed Support (Poll)

City council is nearly split on whether a Riverside pedestrian underpass should move forward.

Ward 7 councillor Irek Kusmierczyk says the entire project should be scrapped before the city spends nearly $80,000 on an environment assessment.

He says the few million dollars it may cost to build the underpass can be used elsewhere.

"For example, parks. Making sure that we have proper lighting, that walkways and trails are fixed, that water fountains are working, that bathrooms are fixed and working," he says.

Council recently voted 6-5 in favour of proceeding with the plan. A study will look at a possible location, price and scope of work needed before council makes a final decision on the project.

"I think we need to re-focus our attention away from the big-ticket purchases," he says. "We need to focus on community parks and neighbourhood and making sure that they are up to a higher standard then they currently are."
