New Catholic Central Sought Again

Built around the same time as the Ambassador Bridge, 86-year-old Catholic Central High School is in need of a new building.

That's why the board is asking the Ministry of Education for $25-million to be used towards a new school at the old Windsor Arena in downtown.

Catholic board Superintendent Mario Iatonna says he's hopeful this time around after the government denied this funding request for the last three years. "Informally the ministry has indicated to us that it's certainly a project of need and meets all of the requirements for consideration," he says. "It's just that there are so many priorities out there and so little money."

The board has released its capital project priorities for 2015 to the ministry and Catholic Central is at the top. "It's really frustrating from a technology standpoint where we can't put new technology in the school because it's just an old building," says Iatonna. "We pride ourselves on providing good environments for students in which to learn and certainly the existing Catholic Central does not do that anymore."

Iatonna says even if funding is approved, it will take a few years to build the new school. Plans call for a two-story school, with a sports field and keeping the green space around Water World.

Improvements and additions to Christ the King, Holy Names, St. Peter, L.A. Demarais and H.J. Lassaline also made the list.
