At Risk Students Get Support

A new program funded by the United Way will support at risk Grade 9 students as they make their way through high school.

Twenty Leamington students will be supported by $150,000 in donations. At their completion of the program in four or five years, they'll receive a $4,000 bursary for post-secondary education.

United Way Windsor-Essex CEO Lorraine Goddard says the students will receive a number of supports. "The program will provide professional tutoring, career exploration and social mentoring. It will also remove financial barriers."

Goddard says teachers are already referring students to the program and they hope to have them chosen by the end of June.

According to Goddard, if they receive more donations, the program will be expanded to more students in future years.
