Community Mailboxes Fight Heads To FCM

Tecumseh's mayor is taking his fight against community mailboxes to the organization that lobbies on behalf of Canadian municipalities.

Gary McNamara, with Essex County Council's blessing, is headed to Burnaby B.C. next month for Federation of Canadian Municipalities meetings. He plans to voice his concerns about Canada Post's decision to end door to door delivery, the location of community mailboxes, and a seeming lack of public consultation.

Canada Post did send a delegation to Tecumseh town council last fall, but McNamara says that won't cut it. "Even myself as the mayor of the community I don't have all the answers," he says. "I think the rationale is, they don't want to face the music."

"My community, in particular, and where they want to impose these community boxes is where most of our seniors and disabled live," he says. "You can see that part of our community was never designed for these boxes."

While McNamara meets with fellow FCM members, the union that represents postal workers, and Windsor-Tecumseh MP Joe Comartin will hold a public meeting March 5 on the issue at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #261 on Lesperance Rd.

McNamara believes about 400 communities across Canada have filed motions against the removal of door to door delivery, and Montreal's mayor is calling for a moratorium on the placement of community mailboxes.
