FINA Budget Not A Concern

The City of Windsor isn't worried about a variance in its budget for the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships because of a low loonie.

The games are set to cost the city $11.3-million US, but the poor exchange rate means it'll actually be about $3-million more than anticipated.

CAO Helga Reidel is hopeful about how the final figures will turn out. "We will do most of our purchasing in Windsor. Our hotel rooms are in Windsor. Our transportation is in Windsor," she explains. "So the fact that we're doing our procurement in Canadian dollars -- we're anticipating that that will mitigate much of the variance."

Reidel adds that the exchange rate is just one factor which will affect how much the event ends up costing Windsor. Sponsors, ticket revenue and upper-level government funding is expected to help.

Council will be getting a quarterly update on the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships budget.
