Victoria Manor Closer To Closure

All but two residents at Victoria Street Manor in Amherstburg are now relocated from the facility set for closure.

There had been 11 residents at the facility, with most now being relocated to long-term care or assisted living centres. The last resident is expected to be out early in the new year, ahead of the January 31, 2015 deadline set by the County of Essex, which operates the facility.

County CAO Brian Gregg says a report needs to come back to council to outline future options for the building.

"We've reviewed internally what the opportunities might be for using it and quite honestly, the building would be of little value to the county itself," says Gregg. "I suspect what we'll do is give some direction to council to put the facility up for sale."

The facility was built in 1991 and its closure announced in early November when it was determined about $250,000 in renovations and $300,000 in yearly staffing costs would be needed to meet new provincial fire safety codes.
