Muslim Forum Tackles Radicalized Violence

A public forum in Windsor on the impacts of violent radicalization on Muslims is calling for a team effort in addressing the issue.

"It can only be done by the Muslim community, by broader society, law enforcement and the government working together," says Faisal Kutty, the Toronto lawyer speaking as a panelist at the forum going on to say legislation like Bill C-44 may actually do more harm than good.

"You have to work across purposes which for instance, by the government enacting all these draconian anti-terror laws, that's going to be counter productive to disengaging people from violence," says Kutty. "Some people use that to say 'look our government is targeting us.'"

Windsor's Yasmine Abouzeeni attended the forum and feels better informed on how to address the violence issue.

"It is a very, very small minority that do in fact partake in these types of activities and as a whole we need to stand together and, instead of a defensive manner, go into a proactive approach," says Abouzeeni.

The Windsor Muslim Students' Association held the forum at the CAW Student Centre on the University of Windsor campus on Wednesday night.  The Ahmadiyya Muslim Student Association is holding a separate event probing the issue Thursday night starting at 6pm at the CAW Student Centre.
