Sewer Upgrade Could Cost Residents

Approval of a report at tonight’s Leamington Council meeting could mean a new sewer and a big bill for property owners on Erie St. S.

Administration is looking for the okay from council to send an application to the Ontario Municipal Board to have the Erie Street South Sewer Reconstruction project carried out under the local improvement process.

The costs could be over $140,000 for property owners benefiting from the sewer work. The municipality has $130,000 budgeted for engineering work in 2014 while in 2015 a further $1.3-million is set out in the draft budget for the project.

A public meeting was held August 20 with the affected landowners. Only four of the possible 31 affected landowners were represented at the meeting. Three objected to being charged, arguing the whole town benefits from the work, but administration says the new sewer service is only for those properties along Erie St. S from Oak St. to Askew St.

Construction is expected to start in 2015. Council meets at 6pm in Council Chambers at the Leamington Municipal Building.
