City Discontinues Skunk Trapping

The City of Windsor is discontinuing its skunk trapping program as of August 4, 2014.

The rat baiting program will continue as will the education portion of the skunk program.

Melanie Coulter with the Windsor-Essex Humane Society says wild animal populations will naturally control themselves without trapping by the city. “As the carrying capacity is exceeded then the population will naturally control itself because they’re going to have smaller litters, fewer of the litter is going to survive and some of them are going to be in closer contact with each other and subject to illnesses.”

Since July 2013, 48 skunks were trapped and euthanized under the program and 102 other wildlife were trapped and released on site. The city is hopeful the new hard-sided garbage rule will deter wildlife from living in residential areas.
