An arbitrator is going to settle the issue of whether the Town of Kingsville is allowed to move forward with expropriating land for the proposed Mettawas Park waterfront development.

The town is agreeing to go to arbitration with the Kingsville Port Users Association to settle the expropriation dispute stemming from an agreement between the two sides.

“It’s a logical request,” says Kingsville Mayor Nelson Santos. “It’s, I think, a question the arbitrator can ultimately decide and help us move forward in the ultimate direction for the municipality and certainly for the betterment of the municipality long-term.”

“Previously to moving forward with the whole expropriation process, there were dialogues and meetings that spanned a couple years, several years,” says Santos. “We weren’t making any gains.”

The town is hoping an arbitration hearing will be scheduled within 30 days.
