Ekblad No. 1 Pick In NHL Draft

Belle River’s Aaron Ekblad has been chosen first overall in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Florida Panthers.

The 6’3″, 216 lbs Barrie Colts defenceman was named the OHL’s top defenceman after collecting 23 goals, 30 assists and 91 penalty minutes in 58 games. He added seven goals and ten assists in the playoffs, where he was a plus-11.

The 18-year-old Ekblad is the second player from Windsor-Essex in history to be picked first overall in the draft.  Windsorite Ed Jovanovski was chosen in 1994 by the Florida Panthers.

Spitfires forward Josh Ho-Sang was also selected in the first round of the draft on Friday. He was selected for the 28th pick by the New York Islanders.

The remaining draft eligible Spitfires are Cristiano DiGiacinto, Ryan Foss, Nikita Yazkov, Patrick Sanvido and Brady Vail.
