Just as a social media campaign dubbed “Draft Teresa Piruzza” gains traction, Windsor City Councillor Bill Marra plans to make a major announcement.

It’s widely anticipated Marra will join the race for mayor in the upcoming municipal election. A release to media outlets Wednesday morning says he’ll make an announcement Thursday.

The campaign to convince Piruzza to run for mayor started soon after she lost her seat in Windsor West to MPP-elect Lisa Gretzky. Should she decide to throw her hat in the ring, University of Windsor political science professor Cheryl Collier anticipates an exciting race. “We could get some interesting ideas on the table, maybe some policy debates,” she says. “This is much better than a coronation.”

Collier says it’s possible the social media campaign may be behind the timing of Marra’s announcement. “Now that we have this buzz about someone else, that will soak up a lot of the media attention and you don’t want to get left out of the mix.”
