Smoking Bylaw Worrying Few In Tecumseh

An information session regarding a bylaw to control smoking in outdoor spaces in Tecumseh drew only a handful of people on Tuesday night.

Judy Lund with the Windsor-Essex chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society feels the low turnout shows there aren’t too many people upset at the bylaw potentially being adopted in Tecumseh.

“Tobacco is one of our costliest habits,” says Lund. “It is the leading cause of early death, it’s the leading cause of lung cancer, it’s one of the risk factors for most cancers and most chronic disease, so I think people really do understand it’s a behaviour we want to denormalize.”

Lakeshore and Leamington are two municipalities in Windsor-Essex that have already adopted bylaws to control smoking in outdoor spaces while the Town of Essex is also considering a bylaw of its own.
