Leamington Mayor John Paterson breathed a sign of relief this morning when he heard the deal to transfer his town’s Heinz factory to Highbury-Canco had been completed.

The new company takes over operations June 27 and will produce tomato juice, canned beans and canned pasta for Heinz.

Paterson now expects the provincial and federal governments to come forward with funding to help the start-up company. “They couldn’t come forward with making any kind of offers to the company to help them with their technology or advancement of the firm. But, now with the signed document, they can now step forward and we’ll see where that takes us.”

Heinz currently employs roughly 800 people. That will be reduced to roughly 250 employees, plus seasonal help, when Highbury-Canco takes over.
