A Windsor police constable will lose about $5,000 in pay after being temporarily demoted to second-class constable for leaving the scene of a crash last July.

Constable Warren Braganza pled guilty to two counts of discreditable conduct at a Police Act Hearing this week, and last week was fined $1,250 in provincial offences court for the same July 3 accident.

When Braganza finished his shift at 11:45am that day, he had four beers at a downtown bar before driving eastbound on Riverside Dr. E at a high rate of speed. At Walker Rd., he ran a red light, drove into the oncoming lanes and hit a Lincoln Navigator. Police say he failed a roadside sobriety test, but later passed a breathalyzer.

Braganza, currently suspended from his job with Windsor police, is also under investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police, for a separate, domestic incident involving his ex-wife last April.
