Scammers Sending Tax Refund Emails

The Canada Revenue Agency website warns of fraud (BlackburnNews.com file photo)

The Windsor Police Financial Crimes Branch has received a number of complaints regarding emails that appear to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.

The subject line of the email is: Your tax refund online. According to police, the email says there’s been an error identified in your taxes amounting to a refund of between $500 and $700 although the amount can be more or less. The email then directs you to create a Tax Gateway account so you can credit your bank account with the specified amount. The sign-up process includes giving up your Social Insurance Number and bank account information which allows fraudsters to apply for credit in your name.

Revenue Canada does not require your SIN or bank account information online.

Police remind you to be wary of any unsolicited email. Anyone with information relating to the scam can call the Windsor Police Service at 519-255-3700 x4330
