Essex Budget All But Finalized
The 2014 Essex budget is approved in principle but is set for public comment before it’s set in stone.
Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche chaired the latest budget meeting with Essex Mayor Ron McDermott attending a personal matter. Meloche says the budget doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles.
“We’ve lost some funding, there’s a lot of expense with roads, costs are continually going up with trying to get work done, we’ve got a lot of facilities in this town to keep up,” says Meloche. “Just realize they all come at a cost.”
It’s a 2.6% tax increase on average across the Town of Essex which includes Harrow and Colchester areas. On a $200,000 home in Ward 1 expect a jump in your tax bill of about $69 and in Wards 2, 3 and 4 a $78 increase. According to the town’s numbers, the average home price in Essex is $155,000.
