NAFTA Agreement Out of Date

An international trade and customs lawyer thinks some possible political will to reopen the North American Free Trade Agreement is good for business.

Speaking at a conference hosted by the University of Windsor Cross Border Institute, Daniel Ujczo says the current agreement has reached its max usefulness.

He says the agreement needs to be updated to keep up with the changing business climate. “On the wish list is I think we need to look at the immigration aspects, labour mobility and I emphasize that that’s business immigration. Updating the categories to reflect 21st century NAFTA categories and the immigration.”

In a recent speech, Prime Minister Stephen Harper hinted Canada may be opening to sitting down the the US and Mexico to renegotiate.
