Water World High School Recommended

A new high school at Water World and Windsor Arena is part of four of the five options an accommodation committee has presented to the director of education at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board. The high school would replace the current Catholic Central location.

The city offered the Water World and Windsor Arena property to the board for $1 and Superintendent of Business Mario Iatonna says they’ve had an architect look at the site. “When the site was first proposed we took a quick look at it to see if a school could indeed fit on that site. We’re quite confident we can construct a high school and sports practice field at that site. Ample parking would be provided across the street on McDougall Ave.” The plan would see the pool filled in and converted into a double-gym for the high school. Estimates put construction costs at $25-million.

The difference in the options surrounds the future of St. Angela’s and Immaculate Conception elementary schools. Some see them combining at different sites, another would have a new elementary school also built at the Water World location. A fifth option considers an addition to FJ Brennan High School and moving Catholic Central students there.

All of the options will be presented at a special board meeting April 14. The board is expected to make a decision May 27.
