A pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car near downtown Windsor Monday.

The incident happened shortly before 9pm according to police. Witnesses say the person was hit by a van on Wyandotte St W near Bruce Ave. The van then apparently fled the scene.

Police confirmed early Tuesday morning that the victim was a young child, about three or four-years-old.  The youngster suffered life-threatening injuries. There were no other injuries reported.

Windsor Police had its accident reconstruction unit still on scene as of 11:30pm. Wyandotte St. W was closed completely between Church St and Bruce Ave.

Police hope to release a description of the van Tuesday, once it views surveillance video footage from the area, but anyone who witnessed the incident, or may have seen the van in question is asked to contact Windsor Police at (519) 258-6111.
