Lambton women's basketball earns silver at provincial championship

Lambton College's women's basketball team came up just short of its first provincial championship in school history over the weekend.

The Lions fell to Humber College 66-62 in overtime in Sunday's OCAA Championship Game from Welland.

Guard Kala Wagg led the way for Lambton with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Fellow guards Claire Dechet and Maddy Bishop each had 11 points and five rebounds, and forward Breanna Pretty had nine points and nine rebounds.

The Lions had a strong first quarter, outscoring Humber 19-10. The Hawks responded in the second with a 23-14 frame, tying the game at 33 at half-time.

Both teams scored 14 points a piece in the third quarter, followed by a low-scoring fourth quarter that saw each team put up 11 points. Humber edged Lambton 8-4 in overtime.

Despite the loss, Lambton still captured a silver medal, the program's first medal at the top level. The Lions defeated St. Clair 67-56 on Friday and Algonquin 53-38 on Saturday en route to Sunday's final.

On the men's side, Lambton fell to Mohawk 99-92 in the bronze medal game.
