Legionnaires top Stars 5-2

The Sarnia Legionnaires ended a seven-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the visiting St. Thomas Stars Thursday night.

Sarnia forward Ryder Nienhuis scored twice in the third period and goaltender Nolan DeKoning turned away 44 shots.

Legionnaires Head Coach Derek DiMuzio said the club got off to a hot start with three first period goals.

"Our first two or three shifts, the guys were ready to compete and we got some bounces early and it definitely helped."

DiMuzio said they had to regroup a bit during the first intermission. However, the Stars responded in the second period with a pair of powerplay goals to cut Sarnia's lead down to one.

"We kind of lit a fire under guys and then we came out stronger, better defensively as a five-man unit in the second," said DiMuzio. "In the third, we lost our composure a tiny bit in certain areas but that's that lack of experience. We're tying to tell the guys to do the right thing, but they're really eager and they haven't been in that position a lot."

The win improves Sarnia's record to 4-12-0 on the season. The Legionnaires are back in action on Saturday when the club hosts Leamington.
