SMAA cancels baseball, girls fastball, football seasons

The Sarnia Minor Athletic Association (S.M.A.A.) says it will not operate the baseball, girls fastball, and football seasons this year.

S.M.A.A. President Lynn Le Faive said the difficult decision was made after lengthy discussion and deliberation by the board.

"Your S.M.A.A. board feels strongly that the safety and wellness of our players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and families are deeply important, and the risks involved with COVID- 19 virus are far too great," Le Faive said in a news release. "The City of Sarnia will not be preparing the playing fields and the washroom facilities may not reopen this season."

Le Faive said the association has over 800 players and members in the system and that those who have paid for this year's registration have three options to choose from including a full refund or carry-over to the 2021 season -- click here for more information.

Processing could take up to four weeks depending on the option chosen.
