Northern Football Conference cancels 2020 season

There won't be any Sarnia Imperials football this year.

The Northern Football Conference (NFC) said it has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The league would have had to wrap up its season by the third week of August to avoid conflicts with OUA varsity football.

Although the Imperials were ready to go, the league's preseason was delayed which gave teams less time for marketing, player signings and training camps.

NFC Secretary Marc Mathon said the safety of the players, coaches and volunteers was also an important factor in making the decision, which is why the league waited until now to make that call.

"Once it became evident that fields across the league would not be available until well into our summer season window, we gathered the membership and together we made this decision, he said. "It was a hard one that nobody took lightly."

NFC clubs could hold training camps, and inter-team scrimmages this summer depending on their local situation.
