McGregor hat trick powers Sting to victory

Ryan McGregor scored his first career hat trick to power the Sarnia Sting (19-31-5-1) to a 6-4 win over the Windsor Spitfires (32-16-5-0) in OHL action Tuesday.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period before the Sting scored three second period goals to open up a 4-1 lead.

The Spitfires cut the Sting lead to two before rookie Ty Voit put Sarnia up 5-2 with one minute to go in the second.

Curtis Douglas scored for the Spits with 2:50 remaining but McGregor responded by hitting the empty net for his third goal of the night.

Matthew Maggio potted a late goal for Windsor to make it a 6-4 final.

Brayden Guy also scored for the Sting and added two assists, while Ryan Roth rounded out the scoring. Sam Bitten, and Jamieson Rees both had two assists.

Sting goalie Ben Gaudreau made 33 saves on 37 shots faced. Windsor's Kari Piiroinen allowed five goals on 18 shots before being pulled at the start of the third period.

Sarnia sits last place in the Western Conference with 44 points, 13 out of a playoff spot. Windsor is 5th place with 69 points.

The Sting are back in action on Sunday in Sault St. Marie before returning home to face Flint on Wednesday.
