Attack rally in OT to extend the Sting's losing streak

The new year for the Sarnia Sting began like 2019 ended, with another loss, their sixth straight.

The Owen Sound Attack rallied for a 5-4 overtime victory before 3,003 fans at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

Sarnia opened the scoring on the power play at the 8-45 mark of the first period on Captain Ryan McGregor's twelfth goal of the season.

Just after the 14 minute mark Matthew Phillip would score to tie the game.

Sarnia would take a 3-1 lead in the second period on a short-handed goal from Sean Josling, his team-leading 27th, and Nolan Burke, his second of the season.

Ethan Burroughs scored for the Attack before the period ended.

Nine minutes into the third period McGregor would pot his second goal of the game to restore Sarnia's two-goal lead.

But it was all Owen Sound after that.

Carter Robinson scored twelve minutes into the third and Matthew Struthers' goal with 16 seconds left in regulation would send the game into overtime.

Struthers would spoil the night for the Sting and the 3,003 fans in attendance with the overtime winner at 3:16 of the extra frame.

Sarnia goalie Ethan Langevin stopped 36 of 41 shots while the Attack's Mack Guzda made 20 saves.

McGregor's two goals and an assist gave him 200 career OHL points.

He said the team played well. " I thought we did a lot of good things again tonight but we just have to figure out a way to close out and win games when we have a lead."

As far as the six-game losing streak in concerned McGregor said "Most of the guys know what's going on right now. I think it's just everyone committing to it and getting it from all four lines, both goalies, all defencemen, everything. We've got to buy in a little more, bring in a full sixty and we'll be fine."

The Sting visit their division-rival Soo Greyhounds Saturday night.

The Soo were pounded 10-4 by visiting Windsor Friday night and have a four point lead over the last place Sting in the OHL's West Division.

The pregame show starts at 6:35 p.m. on 103.9 FM - 1070 AM CHOK.

Sarnia concludes the weekend in Saginaw Sunday.
