Gaudreau shines in debut, Sting win first game

Rookie Benjamin Gaudreau stopped an incredible 49 shots in his OHL debut, as the Sarnia Sting (1-7-0-0) beat the Colts (5-3-0-1) 5-1 in Barrie for their first win in eight games this season.

Gaudreau was tested early and often, turning aside three shots in the first 20 seconds.

He was sidelined for the first seven games of the year with a knee injury.

Sting Associate Coach David Legwand said Gaudreau was outstanding.

"He's a super skilled goaltender and obviously we saw that last year with him," said Legwand. "He slows the game down and makes everything look so simple. I'm happy for him tonight and the way he played and battled for the kids. Hopefully he's going to be a special one."

Tyler Tucker opened the scoring for the Colts 10:06 into the first period. Ryan Roth tied the game with a powerplay goal five minutes later.

The contest was tied 1-1 until the 19:35 mark of the second period when Sean Josling notched a powerplay goal.

Jamieson Rees scored just nine seconds later to put the Sting in front 3-1. Josling and Calvin Martin scored third period goals to seal the victory.

Rees and Roth both had two assists to go along with their goals and Josling also dished out a helper. Justin Nolet had an assist for his first career OHL point.

It was Rees' first game back after serving a six game suspension for a head check against Hamilton on opening night.

The Sting were outshot 50-24, including 21-9 in the opening period.

They're back in action on Friday night in Oshawa.

You can hear all of the action live on 103.9FM and 1070AM CHOK beginning with the pregame show at 7 p.m.
